How Simplified PER Is Calculated
This is a simplified version of John Hollinger's Player Efficiency Rating.
Formula
PER = (PTS + REB x 1.2 + AST x 1.5 + STL x 2 + BLK x 2 - MissedFG x 0.8 - MissedFT x 0.5 - TOV x 1.5) x 48 / Minutes
Benchmarks
Ejemplo Resuelto
25 pts, 10 reb, 5 ast, 1.5 stl, 1 blk, 3 tov, 10/20 FG, 5/7 FT, 35 min/game.
- 01Positive = 25 + 10*1.2 + 5*1.5 + 1.5*2 + 1*2 = 25 + 12 + 7.5 + 3 + 2 = 49.5
- 02Negative = 10*0.8 + 2*0.5 + 3*1.5 = 8 + 1 + 4.5 = 13.5
- 03Raw = (49.5 - 13.5) * 48/35 = 36 * 1.371 = 49.4
- 04Simplified PER = 49.4
Preguntas Frecuentes
What is a good PER?
League average PER is defined as 15.0 in the official formula. Above 20 is All-Star level, above 25 is MVP caliber, and above 30 is a historic season.
How is this different from the official PER?
The official PER includes league-average adjustments, pace adjustments, and per-minute normalization. This simplified version gives a reasonable approximation.
Does PER measure defense?
PER captures blocks and steals but misses most defensive value. It is primarily an offensive stat. Use defensive rating alongside PER for a full picture.
