How to Calculate Scope 1 Emissions

Scope 1 covers all direct GHG emissions from sources owned or controlled by your organization.

Categories

1. Stationary combustion: Boilers, furnaces, generators 2. Mobile combustion: Company-owned vehicles, trucks, forklifts 3. Fugitive emissions: Refrigerant leaks, natural gas leaks 4. Process emissions: Chemical or industrial processes

Emission Factors

  • Natural gas: 11.7 lbs CO2/therm
  • Diesel: 22.4 lbs CO2/gallon
  • Gasoline: 19.6 lbs CO2/gallon
  • Propane: 12.7 lbs CO2/gallon
  • Ejemplo Resuelto

A business uses 5,000 therms gas, 2,000 gal diesel, 3,000 gal gasoline, and 500 gal propane annually.

    1. 01Natural gas: 5,000 * 11.7 / 2,204.6 = 26.5 metric tons
    2. 02Diesel: 2,000 * 22.4 / 2,204.6 = 20.3 metric tons
    3. 03Gasoline: 3,000 * 19.6 / 2,204.6 = 26.7 metric tons
    4. 04Propane: 500 * 12.7 / 2,204.6 = 2.9 metric tons
    5. 05Total Scope 1: 26.5 + 20.3 + 26.7 + 2.9 = 76.4 metric tons

    Preguntas Frecuentes

    What are Scope 1 emissions?

Scope 1 emissions are direct greenhouse gas emissions from sources your organization owns or controls, such as company vehicles, on-site boilers, and industrial processes.

How do Scope 1 differ from Scope 2 and 3?

Scope 1 is direct emissions you produce. Scope 2 is indirect emissions from purchased electricity. Scope 3 covers all other indirect emissions in your value chain.

Are Scope 1 emissions required to be reported?

Many regulations require Scope 1 reporting, including the SEC climate rule, EU CSRD, and California SB 253. Even voluntary frameworks like CDP expect Scope 1 disclosure.
