## How Batting Average Is Calculated

### Formula

**AVG = Hits / At Bats**

Batting average is expressed as a three-decimal number. A .300 average means getting a hit 30% of the time.

### Benchmarks

- **.200**: Below average (Mendoza line)
- **.250**: League average
- **.300+**: Very good
- **.350+**: Elite
- **.400+**: Historical rarity (last achieved in 1941)
