Corrected Calcium Formula

Corrected Ca = Total Ca + 0.8 x (4.0 - Albumin)

About 40% of serum calcium is bound to albumin. When albumin is low, total calcium appears low even if ionized (active) calcium is normal.

Total calcium 8.5 mg/dL with albumin 3.0 g/dL.

  1. Adjustment = 0.8 x (4.0 - 3.0) = 0.8 mg/dL
  2. Corrected Ca = 8.5 + 0.8 = 9.3 mg/dL
  3. Within normal range (8.5-10.5)
