What happens if my average is above the basis score?
If your average exceeds the basis score, your handicap is zero. You bowl scratch (no additional pins). Some leagues may use a negative handicap, but this is rare.
Does handicap change during the season?
Yes. Most leagues recalculate handicap weekly based on your updated average. As your average improves, your handicap decreases.
Why is the handicap percentage not 100%?
Using less than 100% gives better bowlers a slight edge, incentivizing improvement. At 100%, a bowler who bowls exactly their average would always have the same handicap score regardless of skill level.
