General Rules of Thumb
For load-bearing walls, header depth increases with span:
Add 2 inches of depth for each additional floor supported above the opening. Non-bearing walls typically need only a flat 2x4 header for plate support.

Yes, laminated veneer lumber (LVL) beams are stronger than dimensional lumber and are commonly used for longer spans. A single LVL can often replace a doubled 2x header. Check the manufacturer span tables.
Do non-bearing walls need headers?
Non-bearing walls only need a flat 2x4 header to provide a nailing surface for the top plate. The load is carried by the wall framing on either side of the opening, not the header.
