Total Biocapacity vs Cropland
Formule
## How to Calculate Biocapacity Biocapacity measures the capacity of ecosystems to produce useful biological materials and absorb waste. ### Formula **Biocapacity (gha) = Area (ha) * Equivalence Factor * Yield Factor** ### Equivalence Factors - Cropland: 2.51 gha/ha - Forest: 1.26 gha/ha - Grazing land: 0.46 gha/ha - Fishing grounds: 0.37 gha/ha Yield factor adjusts for local productivity relative to world average (e.g., 1.5 for fertile US farmland, 0.5 for arid regions).
Exemple Résolu
200 acres cropland, 500 acres forest, 300 acres grazing with yield factor 1.0.
- 01Cropland: 200 * 0.4047/10000 * 2.51 * 1.0 = 0.0203 gha
- 02Forest: 500 * 0.4047/10000 * 1.26 * 1.0 = 0.0255 gha
- 03Grazing: 300 * 0.4047/10000 * 0.46 * 1.0 = 0.0056 gha
- 04Total biocapacity: 0.0514 gha
Questions Fréquentes
What is biocapacity?
Biocapacity represents the ability of an ecosystem to produce biological resources and absorb CO2 waste. When ecological footprint exceeds biocapacity, we are in ecological deficit.
How does biocapacity differ from ecological footprint?
Biocapacity is the supply side (how much nature can produce), while ecological footprint is the demand side (how much we consume). An ecological deficit occurs when demand exceeds supply.
Can biocapacity be increased?
Yes, through sustainable agriculture, reforestation, soil restoration, and ecosystem protection. However, urbanization and land degradation reduce it.
