Formulas Used

Annual Manufacturing CO2

total_co2 = elec_co2 + gas_co2 + material_co2

Energy-Related CO2

energy_co2_out = elec_co2 + gas_co2

How It Works

How to Calculate Manufacturing Emissions

Manufacturing emissions come from energy use and material processing.

Components

1. Electricity: kWh * 0.92 lbs CO2/kWh 2. Natural Gas: MMBtu * 117 lbs CO2/MMBtu 3. Process emissions: Vary by material (steel ~1.8, aluminum ~8.0, cement ~0.9 tons CO2/ton)

Formula

Total = Energy CO2 + Process CO2

Worked Example

A factory using 50,000 kWh/month, 200 MMBtu/month gas, processing 100 tons/month at 0.5 tons CO2/ton.

energy_kwh = 50000gas_mmbtu = 200material_tons = 100material_factor = 0.5
  1. 01Electricity CO2: 50,000 * 12 * 0.92 / 2,204.6 = 250 metric tons
  2. 02Gas CO2: 200 * 12 * 117 / 2,204.6 = 127 metric tons
  3. 03Material CO2: 100 * 12 * 0.5 = 600 metric tons
  4. 04Total: 250 + 127 + 600 = 977 metric tons/year
