How to Calculate Neutralization Volume

Formula

V_b = (C_a × V_a) / C_b

Where:

  • V_b = volume of base required (mL)
  • C_a = concentration of acid (M)
  • V_a = volume of acid (mL)
  • C_b = concentration of base (M)
  • This applies to monoprotic 1:1 neutralization. For polyprotic acids, multiply by the number of acidic protons.

    Example Calculation

    Neutralize 50 mL of 0.1 M HCl with 0.1 M NaOH.

    1. 01V_b = (C_a × V_a) / C_b
    2. 02V_b = (0.1 × 50) / 0.1
    3. 03V_b = 5 / 0.1
    4. 04V_b = 50 mL
