An at-bat is a plate appearance that does not end in a walk, hit-by-pitch, sacrifice, or catcher interference.

Is batting average still important?

While still commonly used, modern analytics favor OBP (on-base percentage) and OPS as better measures of offensive value.

In youth leagues, .400+ is common. As competition level increases, averages decrease. A .300 average is excellent at the high school level and above.
