Final Volume vs Initial Pressure

Boyle's Law

At constant temperature, the pressure and volume of a gas are inversely proportional.

Formula

P1 * V1 = P2 * V2

If you compress a gas (decrease volume), its pressure increases proportionally.

Example Calculation

A gas at 1 atm and 10 L is compressed to 2 atm.

  1. 01P1 * V1 = P2 * V2
  2. 021 * 10 = 2 * V2
  3. 03V2 = 10 / 2
  4. 04V2 = 5 L
