What Is a Ratio?

What Is a Proportion?
A proportion is an equation stating that two ratios are equal: a/b = c/d. Proportions are used when you know three of the four quantities and need to find the fourth. For example, if a map scale is 1:50,000, a 3 cm distance on the map represents 3 × 50,000 = 150,000 cm = 1.5 km in reality.
Solving Proportions by Cross-Multiplication
To solve a proportion for an unknown, use cross-multiplication: if a/b = c/d, then a × d = b × c. For 3/4 = x/12, cross-multiply: 3 × 12 = 4 × x, giving 36 = 4x, so x = 9. This technique works reliably for all proportion problems and is the foundation of many algebra applications.
Part-to-Part vs. Part-to-Whole Ratios
A part-to-part ratio compares two distinct groups within a whole (e.g., 3 boys to 5 girls = 3:5). A part-to-whole ratio compares one group to the total (e.g., 3 boys out of 8 students = 3:8 or 3/8). Understanding which type of ratio is being described is crucial for accurate interpretation and calculation.
Scaling with Ratios
Ratios are used to scale quantities up or down proportionally. If a recipe for 4 people needs 300 g of pasta, the ratio is 300:4 = 75 g per person. For 10 people, multiply by the scale factor: 75 × 10 = 750 g. This principle applies to architectural blueprints, model building, and ingredient scaling.
Real-World Applications
Proportions and ratios appear throughout everyday life: unit pricing at the grocery store (which package is the better deal?), currency exchange (how many euros per dollar?), speed calculations (miles per hour), and mixing paint colors.
