How to Calculate Deck Board Spacing

Understand how to calculate deck board spacing, board count, and total material for any deck size. Evenly spaced deck boards improve both appearance and drainage while preventing cupping and rot.

Why Spacing Matters

Proper gaps between deck boards allow rainwater to drain, prevent moisture buildup that causes rot, and accommodate seasonal wood expansion. Pressure-treated lumber and hardwoods expand across the grain when wet, so boards installed tight together will buckle in humid conditions. A consistent gap of 1/8 to 1/4 inch between boards is standard for most residential decks.

Calculating Total Deck Width to Cover

Measure the full span of the deck perpendicular to the direction of the boards. This is the distance the boards must collectively cover. If decking runs the 16 ft width of a 16 × 20 ft deck, the total width to cover is 16 ft = 192 inches.

Effective Board Width Formula

The effective width of each board unit equals the actual board face width plus one gap. A 5/4 × 6 decking board has an actual face width of 5.5 inches; with a 3/16-inch gap that becomes 5.5 + 0.1875 = 5.6875 inches per board unit. Number of Boards = Total Width ÷ Effective Board Width = 192 ÷ 5.6875 ≈ 33.8, so you need 34 boards.

Verifying the Gap is Consistent

Multiply the integer board count back out to check the remaining space: 34 × 5.5 = 187 inches of wood, leaving 192 − 187 = 5 inches to be distributed as gaps. Dividing by one fewer gap than boards (33 gaps): 5 ÷ 33 ≈ 0.15 inches per gap. This is very close to 1/8 inch and confirms the spacing works out evenly without ugly wide gaps at the border.

Calculating Board Length and Linear Footage

Board length equals the deck run dimension (the direction boards span). For a 20 ft run, boards are 20 ft long, but standard lengths are 8, 12, 16, and 20 ft. If a 20 ft board is unavailable, two 10 ft boards joined at a joist create a butt joint — stagger these joints across the deck for structural integrity and appearance. Total linear footage = Number of Boards × Board Length: 34 × 20 = 680 LF.

Accounting for Waste

Add 10 % for waste on a straight deck layout: 680 LF × 1.10 = 748 LF. Diagonal decking (45 degrees) increases waste to 15 %. Picture-frame border boards and any angle cuts at the deck perimeter also consume extra material. Round up to the nearest standard board length when ordering.

Fastener and Hardware Estimates

Hidden fastener systems typically include one fastener per board-joist intersection; with 34 boards crossing 10 joists at 24 inches OC on a 20 ft run, that is 34 × 10 = 340 hidden fasteners. Traditional face-screwed decks use 2 screws per board-joist intersection: 34 × 10 × 2 = 680 screws. Add 10 % extra for dropped or stripped fasteners and buy a full box of the next-largest count.
