Why do parallel capacitors add?

Each capacitor stores charge independently. The total charge (and thus capacitance) is the sum.

What about voltage rating?

In parallel, each capacitor sees the same voltage. Use the lowest voltage rating as the limit.

When would I parallel capacitors?

To increase total capacitance or to combine different types (bulk electrolytic + ceramic bypass).

Capacitors in parallel add directly (opposite of resistors). This increases total capacitance.

Example Calculation

10 uF and 22 uF in parallel.
