Inductor Impedance Calculator Formula

Understand the math behind the inductor impedance calculator. Each variable explained with a worked example.

Formulas Used

Inductive Reactance (XL)

reactance = 2 * pi * frequency_hz * ind_h

Variables

VariableDescriptionDefault
inductance_mhInductance(mH)10
frequency_hzFrequency(Hz)1000
ind_hDerived value= inductance_mh / 1000calculated

How It Works

Inductive Reactance

XL = 2 x pi x f x L

Reactance increases with frequency: inductors pass DC and block high frequencies (opposite of capacitors).

Worked Example

10 mH inductor at 1 kHz.

inductance_mh = 10frequency_hz = 1000
  1. 01L = 10 mH = 0.01 H
  2. 02XL = 2 x pi x 1000 x 0.01 = 62.83 ohms
