How It Works

How IB Diploma Scoring Works

The IB diploma totals scores from 6 subjects plus bonus points.

Formula

Total Score = Sum of 6 Subject Scores + TOK/EE Bonus

  • Each subject: 1-7 points
  • TOK + Extended Essay: 0-3 bonus points
  • Maximum: 45 points (42 + 3)
  • Minimum for diploma: 24 points
  • HL subjects must total at least 12
  • Worked Example

    Three HL subjects (6, 5, 6), three SL subjects (5, 6, 5), and 2 bonus points.

    subject1 = 6subject2 = 5subject3 = 6subject4 = 5subject5 = 6subject6 = 5bonus_points = 2
    1. 01Subject total = 6 + 5 + 6 + 5 + 6 + 5 = 33
    2. 02HL total = 6 + 5 + 6 = 17 (meets 12+ requirement)
    3. 03Total IB score = 33 + 2 = 35
    4. 04Average subject score = 33 / 6 = 5.5
