Homework Time Calculator Formula

Understand the math behind the homework time calculator. Each variable explained with a worked example.

Formulas Used

Weekly Homework Hours

weekly_hours = total_credits * study_ratio

Daily Average (7 days)

daily_hours = total_credits * study_ratio / 7

Total Weekly Commitment

total_class_study = total_credits + total_credits * study_ratio

How It Works

How to Estimate Homework Time

The standard guideline is 2 hours of study per credit hour per week.

Formula

Weekly Homework = Total Credits x Study Ratio

Total Commitment = Class Hours + Homework Hours

Study Ratio Guidelines

  • Easy courses: 1.5:1
  • Standard courses: 2:1
  • Difficult courses (STEM, writing-heavy): 3:1
  • Worked Example

    5 courses at 3 credits each with a 2:1 study ratio.

    num_courses = 5credit_hours = 3study_ratio = 2
    1. 01Total credits = 5 x 3 = 15
    2. 02Weekly homework = 15 x 2 = 30 hours
    3. 03Daily average = 30 / 7 = 4.3 hours
    4. 04Total weekly commitment = 15 (class) + 30 (study) = 45 hours
