How It Works

How Much Rice Per Person

Formula

Total Rice (dry) = People x Serving Size

Standard Serving Sizes (dry rice)

  • Side dish: 50-75 g (about 1/4 to 1/3 cup)
  • Main course: 90-130 g (about 1/2 to 2/3 cup)
  • Rice absorbs about 1.5x its weight in water. Use a 1:1.5 ratio of rice to water for white rice (absorption method).

    Worked Example

Cook rice as a side for 4 people.

    people = 4serving_g = 75
    1. 01Serving: 75 g dry per person.
    2. 02Total: 4 x 75 = 300 g dry rice.
    3. 03In cups: 300 / 185 = 1.6 cups.
    4. 04Water needed: 300 x 1.5 = 450 mL.
    5. 05Cooked weight: 300 x 2.5 = 750 g.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the rice to water ratio?

For white rice: 1:1.5 (rice to water) by volume. For brown rice: 1:2. A rice cooker may need slightly different ratios depending on the brand.

How much cooked rice per person?

A side dish is about 125-190 g cooked. A main course is about 225-325 g cooked.

Should I rinse rice before cooking?

Rinsing removes surface starch and results in fluffier, less sticky rice. It is recommended for most white rice varieties.
