Lawn Seed Coverage Calculator Formula

Understand the math behind the lawn seed coverage calculator. Each variable explained with a worked example.

Formulas Used

Seed Needed

seed_lbs = area_sqft / 1000 * seed_rate

5-lb Bags

seed_bags_5lb = ceil(area_sqft / 1000 * seed_rate / 5)

25-lb Bags

seed_bags_25lb = ceil(area_sqft / 1000 * seed_rate / 25)

How It Works

Lawn Seed Calculation

Seed (lbs) = Area (sq ft) / 1000 x Rate (lb/1000 sq ft)

New lawns typically need 3 to 5 lbs per 1,000 sq ft. Overseeding existing lawns uses about half that rate. Choose a seed blend suited to your climate and sun exposure.

Worked Example

5,000 sq ft new lawn at 4 lb per 1,000 sq ft.

area_sqft = 5000seed_rate = 4
  1. 01Seed = 5000 / 1000 x 4 = 20 lbs
  2. 025-lb bags = ceil(20/5) = 4 bags
  3. 0325-lb bags = ceil(20/25) = 1 bag
