Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using the mass of solute in grams directly as moles — you must divide grams by the molar mass (g/mol) of the substance to get moles before dividing by volume.
- Using milliliters instead of liters for the volume — molarity is defined as moles per liter. Using 500 mL as 500 in the denominator instead of 0.5 will make the result 1000 times too small.
- Confusing molarity (M, moles per liter of solution) with molality (m, moles per kilogram of solvent) — they are close for dilute aqueous solutions but diverge significantly for concentrated or non-aqueous solutions.
