Molarity Calculator Formula

Understand the math behind the molarity calculator. Each variable explained with a worked example.

Formulas Used

Molarity

molarity = moles_solute / volume_liters

Millimolar

mmolar = (moles_solute / volume_liters) * 1000

How It Works

How to Calculate Molarity

Formula

M = n / V

Where:

  • M = molarity (mol/L)
  • n = moles of solute
  • V = volume of solution in liters
  • Molarity expresses concentration as moles of solute per liter of solution.

    Worked Example

    You dissolve 0.5 moles of NaCl in 1 liter of water.

    moles_solute = 0.5volume_liters = 1
    1. 01M = n / V
    2. 02M = 0.5 mol / 1 L
    3. 03M = 0.5 M
