Relativistic Momentum vs Rest Mass
公式
## Relativistic Momentum At speeds approaching the speed of light, classical momentum (p = mv) is insufficient. Special relativity modifies the formula. ### Formula **p = gamma * m * v = m * v / sqrt(1 - v²/c²)** As v approaches c, momentum approaches infinity, which is why massive objects cannot reach the speed of light.
计算示例
An electron (m = 9.109e-31 kg) at 0.9c.
- 01gamma = 1/sqrt(1 - 0.81) = 1/sqrt(0.19) = 2.294
- 02v = 0.9 * 2.998e8 = 2.698e8 m/s
- 03Classical p = m*v = 9.109e-31 * 2.698e8 = 2.458e-22 kg·m/s
- 04Relativistic p = gamma*m*v = 2.294 * 2.458e-22 = 5.639e-22 kg·m/s
常见问题
Why can't anything with mass reach the speed of light?
As speed increases, relativistic momentum (and thus the energy needed to accelerate further) grows without bound. Reaching c would require infinite energy.
At what speed does relativity become important?
Above about 10% of c (3e7 m/s), relativistic corrections exceed 1%. Particle accelerators routinely deal with speeds above 99% of c.
Do photons have momentum?
Yes. Photons have zero rest mass but carry momentum p = E/c = h/lambda. This is how solar sails and radiation pressure work.
