Load = Complexity x sqrt(Tasks) x Fatigue Factor

Cognitive load increases with task complexity, the number of simultaneous tasks (scaling as square root to reflect that each additional task adds less than the previous), and fatigue.

Fatigue Factor

Fatigue increases when:

  • Focused work exceeds 4 hours (+10% per extra hour)
  • Sleep was under 7 hours (+15% per hour of deficit)
