Rideshare vs Driving Cost Comparison
Comparing rideshare fares to the true cost of driving (including fuel, depreciation, insurance, and parking) reveals when each option makes financial sense.
Formula
Rideshare = Base Fare + Per Mile Rate x Distance
Own Car = Cost per Mile x Distance x 2 (round trip) + Parking
The IRS mileage rate ($0.67/mile in 2024) captures total car ownership costs. For short trips with expensive parking, rideshare often wins.
计算示例
An 8-mile trip, rideshare at $3 base + $1.50/mile, own car at $0.67/mile + $10 parking.
- 01Rideshare = $3 + $1.50 x 8 = $15.00
- 02Own car = $0.67 x 8 x 2 + $10 = $10.72 + $10 = $20.72
- 03Rideshare saves $5.72 on this trip
常见问题
When does driving your own car win?
Driving is cheaper for longer distances (15+ miles), trips with free parking, multiple errands in one trip, and when traveling with 3+ people (one rideshare fare vs one gas tank).
What about surge pricing?
Surge pricing during peak hours can double or triple rideshare costs. Check the app before booking, and consider waiting 10-15 minutes for surge to drop.
Should I include insurance in car costs?
The IRS rate ($0.67/mile) already includes insurance, depreciation, fuel, and maintenance. If you would pay insurance regardless, using only fuel cost ($0.10-0.15/mile) is fairer for comparison.
